Maths
Mathematics at Bay Primary School, we create an inclusive and supportive environment where every child is encouraged to develop a genuine love for mathematics. We believe that maths should be accessible to all and that success is achievable for every learner. Our approach is designed to build confidence, enjoyment and a positive attitude towards maths from the very beginning.
We follow a mastery approach, ensuring pupils gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Using the Maths – No Problem! programme, inspired by the Singapore method, we provide consistency across the school and place problem-solving at the heart of learning.
Lessons are carefully structured to connect maths to real-life situations, helping children apply their knowledge and strengthen their reasoning skills. Language plays a vital role in understanding mathematics. We support pupils in developing a rich mathematical vocabulary and encourage exploratory discussions in the classroom. Teachers model precise language so that children can clearly articulate their thinking. Practical resources and visual representations help pupils move confidently from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.
At Bay Primary, maths lessons are collaborative, engaging, and thought provoking. We value dialogue, encourage children to express ideas and promote reasoning through discussion. Our commitment extends beyond the classroom: staff receive high-quality professional development to ensure teaching is inspiring and effective. We work together—staff, governors, pupils, and parents—to champion the importance of maths education. Our goal is simple: every child should believe they can succeed in mathematics and enjoy the journey of learning.
